Modern Fireplace Transformation

Hey guys, just finished my fireplace makeover in my home. I went completely outside of my comfort zone while doing this transformation and followed my gut even though it sounded crazy and a little horrifying to most people. So surprising…a black wall in your home isn’t appealing to most? 😉 But, I get it! This transformation was so dramatic and yet so easy to achieve. I seriously am obsessed with the end result and can’t wait to tackle the next spot in my home. If you want to follow along with all my projects from the beginning to end be sure to follow my IG here.

So, lets start at the beginning. Here is a before photo, a professional real-estate image, so you know the best it ever looked. What I wouldn’t do for a real before photo with that brown shaggy carpet, that is so misleading in this photo. Ps… don’t let your husband buy a house without you. I promise he does not care about the same things you do! I do really love that our home has two fireplaces and I could not wait to get at them to decorate, style and transform both.fireplace makeover before photo

Originally, I just painted the mantel a dark gray. It was yellow when we moved in, so I was happy with the improvement. We are about to hit the two year mark next month in our first home and I am already itching to redo the project I initially did when we moved in. Fireplace makeover before farmhouse style

Don’t get me wrong. I love this fireplace, like this as well! My style has started to change and I wanted to go a little less Farmhouse and a little more Modern. Earlier this year, I remodeled my second fireplace, which you can find here, I painted it white and black which I loved and I started to realize that my styles were starting to conflict with each other and I was all in on making my home a more cohesive space. fireplace makeover black paint

What better way to do that, then add my new favorite color BLACK. I know scary, but remember it really is just paint. Completely fixable if you end up completely hating something you do. So don’t be scared to be bold with paint! This color is Black Magic by Sherwin Williams.

If you are scared to make a big change, start small. Originally I painted only my mantel black but I soon realized that I loved the bold statement it made and wanted to keep going. This fireplace has a ton of detailed moulding, that no one ever noticed or could see. I knew making it black would really make it standout and become center of attention.

Once the whole space was painted, something was still missing. I am all about some natural wood these days and I had found this old piece of Barn Wood at a local barn. It was pretty beat up, but I knew it has potential. I ended up plaining it and smoothing both sides. Boom…I couldn’t have be more right. Gorgeous piece of wood!!

My barn wood was a great statement piece for my mantel. I used my Kreg Jig to connect a top and sides. I literally just put it over my previous mantle and drilled it into place. Filled my holes with wood filler, sanded and stained the top of the mantel. Fireplace makeover modern finished look

And there you have it… Modern Fireplace Transformation. Not all transformations have to be huge or expensive. This cost me nothing, because I just used paint and wood I already had at my house. I did however, invest a little money in styling the space. I just can’t help myself, I love styling a completely new look every time. Anyone else having a complete obsession with cactuses and gold lately? I know I am obsessed and that’s the direction I went when styling. A completely new Modern Look!
