Surprise Mouse House

Okay friends…did you see my BIG bathroom reveal for the Jeffrey Court All-Star Renovation Challenge? Do you remember the surprise of the show? Well, I received so many messages and questions about this teeny tiny space that I thought it might need it’s own blog post! 😉

This was actually an accidental project. Those always seem to be the best somehow. While removing the baseboards during the renovation, I accidentally made a hole in the drywall with my hammer. Whoops! At first I figured I would just cover my error up with higher baseboards, but the longer I looked at that hole in the wall the more it got me thinking about all the things it could be. It was a circle and literally looked like a little mouse hole. So…somehow that led my mind to a mouse house!

This little space is actually 3.5″ wide by 5″deep. So tiny! What really makes this space so special is all the little details. I made a bunch of the little things inside of this tiny room to match the bathroom it is inside. Somehow, I thought that would tie everything together. I don’t know about you but, all the little tiny stuff really speaks to me. This project got out of hand so quickly and I just couldn’t stop myself with all the miniature things. LOL!

Creating this little magical space was actually pretty easy. I found that the hole was located in-between two studs. I measured and drew out the space lining up with the studs and used my multi-tool to cut the drywall into a square. Once my space was cut out, I measured the floor base and added plastic sheet tiling. I did the same for all three walls. Then, I measured each space and glued wallpaper to them. The wallpaper came in a pack with a few different styles, so I had a few options to chose from.

I wanted to create an accent wall, because obviously every mouse house needs an accent wall. We all know that slat walls are all the rage right now, so I thought a mini one would be even better. To make the wall, I used two pieces of wood for the top and bottom. The bottom piece was actually mini baseboards. Both were the measurements of the back wall. I made this wall before putting it into place…just to make my life a lot easier. I used strips of craft wood to make the slats and spaced them out just like a real slat wall. Then, I used an extra piece of craft wood as the spacer between each stick. I glued each piece with hot glue on to the top and bottom piece of wood. When it was all finished, I went ahead and added the mirror along with the mini toothbrush holder with hot glue.

For the decor, I was trying to match up my bathroom with the mini bathroom. The mini vanity is made from a mini concrete mold, yes I made that. LOL! The faucets are gold button snap pieces. I used the craft wood for the legs of the vanity as well. The craft wood was also used to make the mini shelf and towel rack.

For the wall decor, I got three tiny mirrors and used one for above the mirror, another went on the wall for decoration, I removed the mirror from the third and my daughter actually drew a tiny picture that I hung on the wall. For hanging things, I just used my hot glue gun.

To make this space really stand out I added a front door. The door is actually premade and comes in various colors. I cut the door frame space out of the baseboards. I glued the door frame into place and added craft wood around the entire door frame to fit perfectly into the baseboards. Once everything was in place, I caulked it all so it looked seamless with the baseboards.

Okay…so here’s the most exciting part about this project. Obviously, it’s super cute but, did you know it’s somewhat functional? I added two puck sensor lights on each side of the wall, so when you open the door the light will turn on. If the door is open and someone walks by it also turns on. Perfect for a little night light. They lights are battery operated and attached just with the sticky adhesive they come with onto the inside of the drywall. So, they are out of sight but, still pick up the sensor.

I would absolutely love to see your creation of this Mouse House if you make it! You can follow and tag me on IG @eyeinthedetail
